For Yarn's Sake Fun Hours
Single session classes held Thursday evenings, as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons.
Class fee: $20 plus materials
Here's what we have planned for you:
- Ready, Set, Go! Start a Top Down Sweater. Thursday September 9th, 5:30-7:30pm. Don’t let the idea of knitting a sweater overwhelm you! We’ll Tackle the beginning of a top-down sweater together, then follow up on your progress during Knit-Chat Hours. Students should know how to cast on, knit, purl, increase and decrease.
- Knitting With Color. Sunday September 12th, 12:30-2:30pm. Color work is beautiful, but it can be intimidating at times. Let Leah help you choose a project that's right for you, and help you finish it without heartache or hassle. Knitters will learn the basics of color work- including the magic of choosing the right colors, stranding, and finishing. Students must know how to cast on, knit, and purl.
- Continental Knitting. Thursdays, September 16th & November 11th, 5:30-7:30pm; Sunday, December 5th, 12:30-2:30pm. One of our most popular classes! Learn to be a ‘Picker’ rather than a ‘Thrower,’ and get your project finished at light speed. Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- Anatomy of a Stitch. Sunday September 19th, 12:30-2:30pm. So you can knit and purl, now what? Learn the characteristics of a stitch – why knitting curls the way it does, why it needs to be blocked, which increase and decrease stitch to use when, twisting stitches, and how different fibers react to different approaches. No pre-requisites.
- Oops, I Dropped A Stitch. Thursday September 23rd, 5:30-7:30pm; Sunday November 14th, 12:30-2:30pm. No longer will you need to come running. You too can figure out where you went astray, and then fix it! Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- Mitering. Thursday September 30th, 5:30-7:30pm. Learn to knit mitered squares using a technique that combines garter stitch with a series of center decreases to create geometric patterns perfect for pillow-tops, afghans, bags, and much more. Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- All Things Shawls.* Thursdays October 7th & 14th, 5:30-7:30pm (*this a 2-part class). Learn to create one of the season’s hottest trends in this shawl class, which features the patterns of several prominent knitwear designers. Expand your lace-knitting skills and move beyond the basic scarf! Students should know how to cast on, knit, purl, increase and decrease. $40 plus materials.
- Double Knitting. Saturday October 9th, 9-11am. Not just for beautiful reversible color-work projects, double knitting skills will let you knit sweater sleeves that match exactly every time, and, gasp, even knit one sock inside another sock! Students can pick one of several patterns. Students must know how to cast-on, knit, purl, and slip a stitch.
- For the Love of Lace. Sunday October 10th, 12:30-2:30pm. This beginner’s lace class will take you into the intricate world of yarn overs, PSSO’s K3tog’s and life lines. Create a special, lacy project of your own choosing. Students must know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- Intarsia. Sunday October 17th, 12:30-2:30pm. You too can create patterns with large blocks of multiple colors! Learn bobbin and carry techniques, as well as basic color theory. Taught by our own color aficionado, Leah, you're sure to have a great time as you journey into the fabulous world of color work. Students must know how to cast on, knit, and purl.
- Hats, Hats, Hats! Thursday October 21st, 5:30-7:30pm. Take your knitting skills to the next level by tackling one (or more!) of these popular and trendy hat patterns! From an updated vintage classic to a slouchy beret to a whimsical child’s cap . . . these patterns are sure to become some of your very favorites! Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- Let’s Felt! Sunday October 24th, 12:30-2:30pm, Thursday December 9th, 5:30-7:30pm. Learn to do to wool what your mom told you never to do to wool. We’ll help you get started on a purse, bag, or adorable basket. ! Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- “Got Sock Yarn, Don’t Want Another Pair of Socks!” Thursday October 28th, 5:30-7:30pm; Sunday December 12th, 2:45-4:45pm. Are you accumulating quite an assortment of sock yarn in your stash? Let's use some of it to knit up fun items (other than socks!) such as a ruffled scarf, a darling pair of slippers, beautiful berets, or lacy fingerless gloves! Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- Cozy Toesies! Sunday October 31st, 12:30-2:30pm. Felted, Knitted, small or gigantic. We’ll get you started on that perfect pair of slippers to keep your tootsies (or those of someone you love) warm. Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- Holiday Knits. Thursday November 4th, 5:30-7:30pm. A darling snowman, Christmas stockings, and a selection of ornaments are among the knitted projects featured in this class, all designed to help you get ready for the rapidly approaching holiday season! Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- Amigurumi, Sunday November 7th, 12:30-2:30pm. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures: the perfect adorable and quick gift for the holidays. Learn to navigate the uncharted waters of 3D knitting and crochet. Students must know how to cast on, knit and purl OR crochet.
- Finishing Techniques. Saturday November 13th, 9-11am. Learn the little secrets of necklines and waistbands that behave, invisible seams that don't pucker, button bands that make you proud, and even how to put a zipper in your knitting! Students must know how to cast on, knit, and purl.
- Knits for the Home. Thursday November 18th, 5:30-7:30pm. Every kitchen could use some hand-knit dishcloths and potholders, everyone loves a comfy afghan during the cold winter months, and why not use you knitting skills to accessorize your home with colorful pillows, felted bowls, throws and more! Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- Crochet for Knitters. Saturday November 20th, 3-5pm. Frustrated with those tricky crocheted edges? Learn the basics of crochet as it relates to knitted garments - the differences between knitting and crochet, 4 basic stitches, and the advantages of incorporating crochet into your knitted projects. Students must know how to cast on, knit, and purl OR crochet.
- Entrelac. Sunday November 21st, 12:30-2:30pm. Knit. Turn. Knit. Turn. Learn the time-honored technique to create a textured diamond pattern with a series of interconnected squares on two different orientations. You’ll learn the technique, while creating a fun and quick project. Students must know how to cast on, knit and purl.
- Knitted Gifts. Thursday December 2nd, 5:30-7:30pm. What could be better than a hand-knit gift? Tuck that bottle of wine into a knit bottle cover for a hostess gift, make the men in your life a ribbed hat/scarf set, surprise a lucky child with a hand-knit stuffed animal, give the teenagers on your list a trendy slouch cap, or knit up a drawstring pouch for a special treasure! Students should know how to cast on, knit and purl.
General and On-Going Offerings
Kids Can Knit (and Crochet) Too! - Anne Laird.
Knit, Purl and Cast-on, Knit In The Round. In this fun class, your little ones will learn teh basics of knitting and crochet with Anne. Ages 8 to 14.
$60 plus materials. Saturdays, 10:00-11:30 AM.
Session 1 – September 11th, 18th, 25th, & October 2nd.
Session 2 – October 16th, 23rd, 30th, & November 6th.
Session 3 – November 20th, December 4th, 11th & 18th
Knitting Basics and Beyond - Anne Laird
Never touched a knitting needle before? Used to knit but need a refresher? Know how to knit but want help along the way with a new technique or project? Then this is the perfect class for you. In this 4-sessions class, Anne will guide you through your latest knitting endeavor, whatever that may be. Class fee: $70 plus materials.
- Sundays, 2:45-4:45pm:
Session 1 – September 12th, 19th, 26th, & October 3rd.
Session 2 – October 10th, 17th, 24th & 31st.
Session 3 – November 7th, 14th, 21st, & December 5th.
- Wednesdays, 10am-12noon:

Private Knitting and Crochet Lessons
Whether you’re a newbie knitter or crocheter, or want to dive in to a brand new technique or special project, you can tailor make your own class. For all ages and ability levels. You choose the time, we’ll provide the space and instructor.
$20 per hour for individuals; $35 per hour for two people.
Drop-In Knitting Basics and Beyond - Anne Laird
Single Sessions of Beyond the Basics. $20. Wednesdays, December 8th & 15th, 10am-12noon. Plesae sign up in advance as space is limited.
Knit Chat - FREE
Tuesdays from 6 to 8pm & Thursdays from 9 to 11am
Come join the fun! This is the time to relax and knit, get help with your project from fellow knitters, and make new friends. Anne, Leah, Marilyn and Anne are here to help and join in the fun as well. We’re happy to answer quick, simple questions; more detailed or individualized instruction is available for a fee ($10 for first 5-30 minutes, $10 for each 30 minutes after that).

Can’t make it to Knit Chat? We’re delighted to help you with project issues as they arise. So that we can give you the undivided attention you deserve, please call ahead and schedule a time. If it’s a quick fix (5 minutes or less), there’s no charge. If the problem is bigger, materials were purchased elsewhere, or instruction is involved, $10 for up to 30 minutes will get you back on course.
Sock Hour - FREE
Tuesday from 4:00-5pm
With so many beautiful, hand-painted yarns to choose from, there’s nothing more fun than knitting socks! Her own personal addiction, owner Anne is excited to share this passion with any and all interested knitters and crocheters. And to further indulge your sock-knitting pleasure, For Yarn Sake is always stocked with scrumptious sock yarns to choose from, many created by local dyers.
Focused Class Offerings
Fingerless Gloves – Leah Davidson
Back by popular demand! Learn the ins and outs of knitting those beautiful little hand warmers with a special place for your thumbs. Students must know how to cast on, knit, and purl. $40 plus materials.
Sundays September 26th & October 3rd, 12:30-2:30pm.
Anatomy of a Sock – Leah Davidson
Say NO to store-bought socks! This 3-part class will teach you everything you need to know about knitting amazing socks. Weekly homework assignments will help you move successfully toward the finish line. Students must know how to cast on, knit, and purl.
$60 plus materials. Saturdays, 3-5pm.
- Session 1 – Cuff Down.
Cuff down socks are easy and fun. Knitters will learn the stretchiest cast-on, using double points or the magic loop, the why's, what's and how's of the "need-not-be-intimidating" heel flap and gusset, and final finishing techniques. September 11th, 18th & 25th. - Session 2 – Toe Up.
Toe-up socks are great with hand died yarns because they take the guess-work out of how long to make your cuff! Students will learn Judy Becker's magic cast-on, short row heels (simple & beautiful- who knew?), and an insanely stretchy bind-off. October 30th, November 6th & 13th
Anatomy of A Sweater - Leah Davidson
This 4-part class will teach you more than you ever thought there was to learn about knitting a sweater. Starting with a tutorial on fiber knowledge, you’ll move through measuring and math, construction, styles, pattern alteration, and finishing. Weekly homework assignments will help you move successfully toward the finish line. Students must know how to cast on, knit, and purl. $80 plus materials. Saturdays October 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd, 3-5pm.
POLICIES & ETIQUETTE
Student Discounts: A 10% discount applies to materials required for class. Apologies; this does not apply to sale items or class fees.
Registration: Class fees must be paid in full to guarantee your space. Class size is limited to 8 (6 for Kids “Can Knit Too!”). To register, call us at (503) 469-9500 with a credit card, or drop in the store.
Missed classes: If you have to miss a class for illness or an unforeseeable emergency, please call us in advance of the class and we’ll discuss the possibility of a make-up session or credit. Last minute cancellations or no-shows are not eligible for credit or make-up sessions. Make-up sessions must be completed before the end of the session period following the session you’ve signed up for.
Cancellations: A full refund will be given if cancelled at least one week prior to the start of your class. Because class size is limited and instructor time is committed, you’ll be issued a class credit for cancellations within a week of your class only if we’re able to fill your spot.
Please purchase class materials prior to the start of class. Thank you for silencing your cell phone, and taking calls / texting in an area separate from the class.
